Well what can you say?
This was a terrible performance and we didn’t get what we deserved, which should have been a total hiding from The Tractor Boys whose finishing let them down on the night.
It’s shocking to see the club in total free fall, but if we continue in this vein then we will be in serious danger of getting relegated unless we can snap out of it in time.
Ipswich could have been four or five goals to the good at half-time, with our team in total disarray. There was nothing. Forget about a lack of effort, there was no effort at all. It was a disastrous display.
The majority of football basics were completely ignored, including players not tracking back or marking properly, not doubling up on wide men, not letting the ball bounce, not winning tackles, not winning second balls, not closing down and generally not doing anything.
There was no sign of intelligent build up play or basic concepts on show. Similarly in defence, we were all at sea with no organisation, no communication and no leadership out there. At defending corners the players stood stone cold like statues.
Ipswich found acres of time and space to play and get on the ball, just in front of our back four, despite having two defensive midfielders in the side. We on the other hand never got into the same situations until Adel Taarabt was introduced in the second-half.
And for all his frustrating traits, which drives me crazy at times, he’s still the one player who can make things happen and make a defence nervous. It’s no use putting him on the bench and then expect him turn it on and turn things around when he’s just a boy who is still learning his trade though. If you’re going to play him, play him from the start.
Every time the ball went wide, an Ipswich player overlapped and was left totally unmarked, leaving either of our full-backs exposed and outnumbered and they had a hard enough time dealing with one-on-one situations and losing out aplenty with those to have to contend with anything more.
When a guy who has been out for the best part of two seasons is putting in more of a shift than the rest in Lee Cook, well it says it all really. Had the rest shown just a modicum of his effort throughout the match, we’d have not been undone like we were
As much as it was amusing and oddly fascinating to witness at times, it really is heartbreaking to see players of this quality simply taking the piss. It was totally unprofessional and it doesn’t matter if you’re lacking in confidence and form, there’s still a certain manner you have to conduct yourself on the pitch and we’re just not seeing that at the moment. Some of them were completely anonymous whereas others just walked about.
And just how do you correct all the shortcomings surrounding QPR at the moment?
We really need to get some pattern play going and pick a settled side. We have no Plan A for anything let alone Plan B. Here in this match, we attacked and defended without any plan in sight and it looked random and as if the players were just going through the motions and only reacting to the direction the ball was kicked in.
Perhaps we need to solve the managerial situation as soon as possible? Get someone permanent in who is given the time and backing to sort this mess out, because to me it seems that’s the only way we’re going to move forward.
Is waiting until the end of the season the right thing to do? I don’t know, but I’m sure the more time that person has to lay the foundations and rebuild, the better. Right now we’re collapsing into a large heap of rubble and it’s going to take someone with the proper knowhow to come in and sort it out.
