I’m not really sure what to think about all this. I mean, I wasn’t entirely sure if Paolo Sousa was the right choice in the first place, but I liked him and his concepts and wanted to see what he could achieve over a period of time, because if he got it right it would have created a unique style of football that would have made us very different to any other team in this country. It would have been a unique brand, which is kind of what the Board wanted?
Whatever way you look at it, the removal of Sousa is a bitterly disappointing announcement and I’m concerned that the kamikaze approach the Board are currently employing is going to scare away potential employers in the future, both on the playing and coaching side. Not to mention the fans, who are paying customers.
Every football club needs stability and time to mature and grow, so this is another step backwards and we’ve taken plenty of those since Luigi De Canio’s departure. That’s not to say we haven’t gone forwards too, but we’re making elementary mistakes that’s costing everybody at QPR and wiping the smile off a lot of faces both inside and outside the club.
The Board have spoken about a desire to make the club a self sufficient business that can stand on its own two feet. That’s come at a price in terms of the pockets of the fans, but in many ways I understand this approach even if it is very hard on us, because I’ve always wanted to see QPR self sufficient too.
But, we’re not helping ourselves reach that goal if we continue to chew through our staff like a pack of sweets and the fans shouldn’t be the ones responsible for coughing up hard earned cash that is merely going towards remuneration packages, even if they may have used this scenario to get around paying out this time.
We need to make the right choice, get the right man in, get the right team behind that man and stick with it by giving them a chance to flourish. Hiring somebody with no management experience and then giving them just 5 months in the job is not enough time.
I said recently in a vox pop on Loft For Words that we’ve played too much football with fear this season and that fear has manifested itself right through the club to the staff, the players and the fans. And I think that’s a real shame for all everybody and a worrying problem that needs to be addressed and handled with the most extreme care going forward.
Good luck with your future endeavours Paolo and I hope this incident and experience doesn’t put him nor Bruno Oliveira off of management in the future as they definitely have the potential to succeed somewhere.
