The loan signings of Jason Jarrett and Rowan Vine are interesting.
I wonder why these deals were not agreed to and arranged prior to the Colchester United game? Surely it would have made sense to have got these players in earlier and allow John Gregory a chance to go with them?
Perhaps Gregory didn’t want them. Perhaps the club have now panicked and rushed into deals that are not as favourable as they should be? I’m not really sure what the answer is, but I do think these two players provide enough quality for us to start changing the way we play our football.
We’ve got options now with Mikele Leigertwood, who can fill in at right-back or centre-back, and that’s something that may need to happen in the short-term to help shore up our leaky defence and provide a bit more steel and pace there. With him on the right, Marcus Bignot or Samspa Timoska on the left and Michael Mancienne and Danny Cullip in the centre, that’s a pretty decent looking defence at this level and good enough to dig out clean sheets with Lee Camp behind them.
Likewise, we can adopt five in the middle if absolutely necessary and have enough in there to battle and grind out results, be it a point or three. This is also an important stepping stone for us, even if it’s not an attractive way to go about taking the club forward. It must be done, the results are important now and we’ve got to start picking up points quickly. No mercy boys – get out there and do whatever you need to do to grab the results.
Rowan Vine is a good footballer and I like the way he links up play and moves into the channels. He’s got good intelligent movement and is quite quick and nimble, so if we can find him wide, I think his style, the way he slightly holds up the ball on the turn before running with it, will help us going forward. It will invite others to join the attack. We’ve now got a nice mixture of players up top with Dexter Blackstock, Daniel Nardiello and Ben Sahar. I’m quite excited to see if we will even try a 4-3-3 at some point, because it’s possible now. The combination of Blackstock, Vine and one out of Nardiello or Sahar can definitely work in home games. I think they’d all link fairly well providing the shape and service is right.
Jason Jarret isn’t going to light up our world, but he’s a good solid professional, much like Adam Bolder is actually. They’re good for what we need them to be at this level and I think this will mean Bolder will be able to adopt a more defensive role which is to his strengths. Let him get stuck in and protect the back four and let Jarret do the rest in front of him.
With Gareth Ainsworth wide right and Martin Rowlands wide left, we’ve got a good experienced team now. There is no hiding place and they’re going to have to start showing they mean business out there.
I’ll be at the game tomorrow cheering the team on and these additions have somewhat cheered me up and hopefully will freshen things up in there.
Come on you Rs.
